When the source data is empty, what should a sports journalist write?

An analysis document reached my desk while I was ready to compare numbers. It had the full structure of a professional sports report: eight sections covering tactics, players, tournaments, rules, risks, media narratives and the wider sports industry. Yet every assessment row returned N/A. There was no match, no player, no tournament, no record and no transfer fee to cite. There was nothing I could write without inventing facts. If I followed an old habit, I could pick a famous name, attach him to a nonexistent match and turn it into a plausible-looking analysis. That is the quickest way to fill an empty front page. But sport and writing share the same rule: when data is missing, silence is a professional answer. A wrong calculation built on a fabricated number is far more dangerous than a blank table. In high-level competitions, the hardest moment is not when the opponent attacks constantly. The hardest moment is when you hold the Queen and do not know where to place it. I learned that through years of watching chess players and footballers. They are not afraid of making mistakes. They are afraid of imagining a move to hide an empty square on the board. An article built from an empty analysis would look like that move: beautiful in the writer's mind, meaningless to the reader. That empty table still sends a message. It tells me the initial extraction stage received no source material. Every judgment about tactics, player quality or competitive risk needs an anchor. Without an anchor, every number I add is only a whisper inside my head. Fans need facts, not a story constructed from imagination. There is a temptation that makes many sports outlets fall: they believe a newsroom must always publish something new to keep readers. During a transfer window, this fear becomes stronger. Rumours fly, agents contradict each other, and every signing-on fee can change after one phone call. But writing randomly to fill a gap is a self-inflicted trap. If you are wrong once, readers will question every later article. I cannot confirm that any star is about to move, any coach has been sacked or any club is in crisis, because the input document itself contains none of that information. My job is not to guess. My job is to point out that the writing workflow must restart from the sourcing stage. A good sports article is built from data, not from hope. The N/A status in eight analytical sections is a warning for the whole content chain. When a tool cannot find an event, it should not create an event. When a reporter cannot find a character, he should not invent a character. An empty stadium does not mean the match is over. It only means that no one has entered the pitch yet. A serious newsroom can survive one day without an analysis piece. It cannot survive if that analysis piece is built on air. When the data knocks on the door, I will write. For now, I choose to keep the board clean and wait for a real move.
