Jon Rahm keeps future open with LIV 1.0 contract comment as LIV Golf resets

Jon Rahm is in Ireland for the 2026 Amgen Irish Open, a DP World Tour event that also features Rory McIlroy. His appearance on this stage is not a surprise anymore, but his answers about the future have become the real talking point as LIV Golf’s 2026 season ended early at LIV Indianapolis last month. The league’s future is now uncertain after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund stopped funding it. LIV Golf is trying to build a new model called LIV Golf 2.0, but that requires two things: big-money investors and the commitment of top players such as Jon Rahm. Without guarantees that Rahm and other stars will stay, investors will not put millions into the project. Rahm signed a long-term LIV contract in 2026, reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Now, with LIV Golf possibly being restructured, it is unclear whether the new model will inherit the old contract or whether Rahm will keep his side of the deal. Speaking to BBC Sport on Tuesday before the Irish Open, Rahm said: “There’s just a lot of things in place, right? There’s a lot of things that could happen, and it’s one of those things where time’s gonna tell.” Asked if he wants a pathway back to the PGA Tour, Rahm added: “Well, you know, I still have a contract with LIV 1.0 that I’m more than willing to fulfill. So, like I said, time will tell.” The key phrase is “LIV 1.0”. Rahm did not simply say he has a contract with LIV Golf. He deliberately used a term that separates his current deal from LIV CEO Scott O’Neil’s vision for LIV 2.0. The message may be subtle, but it is clear: if the new LIV model does not honor his original contract, Rahm will not automatically see himself as bound to it. For now, Rahm is focused on the Irish Open. Off the course, he is leaving every option open. Both Rahm and LIV Golf know that time is running out, and the next move will define much of golf’s future.
